Soumayah Nanji is an African and Caribbean descent professional dancer, choreographer, performer, and teacher with 25 years of experience. She is trained in African, Ballet, Dancehall, Heels, Hip-Hop, House, Modern, Salsa, Samba, and Street Jazz. Her training spans various schools and performing arts programs nationally and abroad such as Ailey Extension, Bale Folclorico Da Bahia, New Waves Dance and Performance Institute, and Peridance.
Soumayah has trained with numerous dance instructors and choreographers from all over the world including Jose Carlos Arandiba, April Berry, Rennie Harris, Renee Robinson, Korie Genius, Kim Holmes, Theodore Jamison, Danielle Lima, La Mora, Frida Persson, and Sekou Heru. In 2012, Soumayah was the first out of state choreographer to be selected to serve as an artist in residence with the Miami Dade College Dance Department-Kendall Campus and a recipient of the tuition grant for the New Waves Dance and Performance Institute in Trinidad & Tobago, and the 2006 Dynamic Dunham Dance Festival Scholarship recipient. Her certifications include Site Specific Dance and Performance from CalArts and Acting For Film from the New York Film Academy. Soumayah is also a graduate of the Tri-Cities High School Visual and Performing Arts Program where she majored in dance. Soumayah is the Artistic Director of her own dance company, Gifted En Movement Dance Theater and travels the world teaching African diaspora dance. Currently, Soumayah has recently completed a dance residency in Afrobeats and Dancehall in Tokyo, Japan with the Hinton Battle Dance Academy and is touring Asia teaching African diaspora dance workshops and lectures in Afrobeats and Dancehall.
